A Bold Stage for Entrepreneurs

On Thursday, April 30, 2026, the 7th edition of the Startup Pitch Competition took place on the Food & Bev Connect stage at SIAL Canada in Montréal. This flagship event spotlighted 15 promising entrepreneurs from the Startup Village, ready to accelerate their growth.

Focused on innovation, sustainability, and food safety, the competition is designed to identify and reward products and technologies with strong potential for scalable growth and market expansion across North America.

The competition unfolded across three distinct categories, each featuring 5 entrepreneurs:

  • Start-up Seed CPG (0–3 years) – early-stage consumer packaged goods startups
  • Start-up Scale CPG (4–6 years) – growth-stage companies ready to expand across the North American market
  • Start-up FoodTech – technological innovations transforming the agri-food industry

Each participant had 2:30 min to pitch their vision to a jury of industry experts, followed by a 5-min Q&A session.

More than a competition, the Startup Pitch Competition is a strategic platform connecting entrepreneurs with buyers, investors, and key decision-makers from across the agri-food ecosystem. Congratulations to our 2026 winners, who stood out for the strength of their innovation and their vision for the future of food.

Stay tuned for the 8th edition, coming to SIAL Toronto in April 2027.

Maia Farms | First Prize FoodTech Category

Born out of a unique challenge — developing a sustainable and nutritious protein source for space missions — Maia Farms won the Deep Space Food Challenge launched by the Canadian Space Agency and NASA. The technology designed for space is now being put to work for food on Earth.

The Vancouver-based company has developed a proprietary liquid-state fermentation platform applied to oyster mushroom mycelium. The process grows mycelium in bioreactors fed with upcycled agricultural inputs, delivering high yields, a low water and energy footprint, and industrial scalability.

From this technology, Maia Farms produces Maia™FORM, a textured plant-based protein combining oyster mushroom mycelium and Canadian-grown pea protein. A clean-label ingredient containing all nine essential amino acids, it offers a texture, water-binding capacity, and performance comparable to those of meat, without the allergens or aftertaste commonly associated with traditional plant proteins. An innovation designed to transform the formulation of alternative proteins at scale.
