Stonetown Artisan Cheese: Between Tradition and Innovation

Grand Champion 2023 and "firm cheeses" Category Champion

Interview with Hans Weber

- Founder and Owner of Stonetown Artisan Cheese

Could you briefly introduce your award-winning product or company and explain what makes it unique in the market?

We are an on-farm cheese processing plant with a master cheese maker from Switzerland. Ramon Eberle is a partner in the business and he brought all the recipes from Switzerland. This Wildwood cheese is made with the recipe from the Appenzeller cheese. In the last ten years we won many awards with this cheese including Grand Champion and Firm Cheese Category Champion at SIAL International Cheese Competiton in 2023.

How was your experience during the competition and the exhibition?

Overwhelming! We’re not used to be in the spotlight but this win was a very exciting and positive experience.

Did you experience a “SIAL effect” following your participation in the competition?

Yes, the Wildwood cheese definitely got famous through this win and it also put Stonetown Artisan Cheese on the map.

Have you seen an increase in sales or interest in your brand as a result of this award?

We definitely saw an increase in sales. Wildwood is one of our best selling cheeses.

In a few words, what do you take away from your participation in the SIAL Canada exhibition and the competition?

The SIAL is a great show and we met a lot of passionate people from the cheese industry and made life long friends.

About Stonetown Artisan Cheese

Stonetown Artisan Cheese is an on-farm cheese plant located in St. Marys, Ontario. Our award winning hand crafted alpine style cheese is made with fresh whole cow’s milk from our family farm. In order to obtain a great taste, the milk is unpasteurized and has no additives. This ensures that the cheese is pure and natural. The cheese making process is very similar to how cheese has been made for centuries in the mountain dairies in the Swiss Alps.

From our family to yours, we look forward to making the small moments in your life that much richer, one cheese slice at the time.
