QUEBEC CHEESE NAMED GRAND CHAMPION!
On the trade show-opening day, April 30 at 4 pm, the 28 champions of the first International Cheese Competition by SIAL were revealed. This competition was the first of its kind on the site but also in Canada!
The jury, chaired by Gurth M. Pretty, consisted of a panel of cheese industry professionals who evaluated the cheese that were entered in 23 categories. Following the jury's deliberation, 23 medals (1 per category), the Best English Cheese prize, Best Italian Cheese prize, Dairy Farmers of Canada prize, Best New Cheese prize and Grand Champion Cheese were announced at the Cheese by SIAL area.
Quebec's Fromagerie La Station’s Alfred le Fermier Grand Cru cheese was selected by the jury panel after a tie breaking vote, as the Grand Champion cheese. This artisanal farmstead cheese also won as the best firm cheese and the Dairy Farmers of Canada prize.
Cheese from Austria, Bulgaria, Canada (P.E.I., Quebec and Ontario), France, Italy, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom were named as champions in their respective categories.
229 cheese from nine countries were entered for this first edition, proof of the undisputed success of this great international competition. It aimed to highlight the innovation, know-how and passion of cheesemakers on an international level. Held in an open area, visitors and exhibitors were able to observe the evaluating procedure.
